Legislative framework
The Building Act (R.S.Q., c. B-1.1) is applied by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec and provides for the adoption of a building code that sets forth specific standards for buildings, equipment and installations.
The National Building Code cites National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA-13, Standard for the installation of sprinkler systems, regarding the design of automatic sprinkler systems in Québec.
All CMEICI members have in-depth knowledge of not only standard NFPA-13, but also NFPA-14, NFPA-16, NFPA-20, NFPA-25, and NFPA-30, as well as the codes, standards and regulations applicable in the various municipalities they serves.
Moreover, pursuant to section 24 of the Québec Engineers Act, the installation plans and specifications for sprinkler systems that are mandatory in new builds worth over $100,000 must be signed and sealed by an engineer.
